Tinja (and the rest of her family) are under the thumb of the mommy blogger Mother, who seeks to create an idealized vision of her home-life to share with the rest of the world over the internet. Make no mistake of it, this is a fairy tale, and a fucked-up one at that in proper Nordic tradition.
Even in the close, when Alli’s eyes have become fully human, scars remain, reflecting her ghastly origins. As ‘Alli’ becomes ever more human, vestigial elements remain, feathers giving way to hair and extra teeth jutting out of her cheeks.
It’s grotesque, but oddly endearing in its movements and behavior there’s a real interiority to its motives and drive. The creature effects created by Gustav Hoegen and his puppeteer team are absolute crackerjack, every movement lifelike and adhering to an internal logic which melds birdlike and human movements. It has a vaguely humanoid form, and over time becomes ever more like its surrogate mother in appearance. After finding an egg abandoned by a murdered crow in the spooky haunted woods directly next to her house, Tinja cares for it until it hatches into a massive avian monstrosity. Hatching knows these uncomfortable truths and extends it into the realm of body horror. And that’s not even touching the whole dinosaur lineage situation. Their knees bend backwards, they have these weird skeletal beaks, and their beady little eyes seem to stare directly into your soul.
